Hello, can anybody recommend me IFs with complicated MC and experience that shapes the MC and their interaction with their world (to be precise, MCs that has bad luck or unhappy and would complain about their bad situations haha) . Even better if MC has a personality rather than just empty self insert MC, if that's make sense (it's really hard to find MC that feels 'alive' and not the silent type mc)..I don't mind twines and WIPs

I really love heavy and mature topics so don't be afraid to rec me IFs with sensitive contents.. And lastly, i love when MC can also play as the villain or the "bad guy" with irony to accompany MC in their interactions so i would be really grateful if that's included in the IFs..

This far, my top most favourites being:
  1. Fallen Hero (my all time favourite of most complicated mc i've ever read in IFs)
  2. Samurai of Hyuga (has both complicated mc and villain and all of the characters feel so alive)
  3. Project hadea (i really love rohan despite all the hate he always got)
  4. Wayhaven (wayhaven is.. Just wayhaven)
  5. All of the vampire the masquerade series (mostly the VtM franchise always has complicated characters)
  6. Tally ho, midsummer, and jolly good (hilarious)
  7. I, the forgotten one and whiskey four (both have a heavily traumatizing past)

some more list i have read and liked:
  • Apartment 502
  • Love and leases
  • The exile
  • Drink your villain juice
  • Don't wake me up
  • Mind blind
  • Corruptant
  • The gray painter
  • Fernweh saga
  • The grim and i
  • Evertree series
  • Community college hero
  • Unsupervised
  • Creatures such as we
  • Blood money (i love the concept but i wasn't really into the general plot being a family drama)
  • Psy high
  • Rent-a-vice (really love the way it deals with darker topics)
  • Fox spirit
  • Larkin
  • Sinners and saint
  • Before we are ghosts
  • Hollowed mind
  • One knight stand (so confusing but so amusing)
  • Nothing left to burn
  • Affairs of the court
  • Choice of robots
  • Ghost simulator
  • Parents sim
  • The passenger (empty and confusing at the start but gets complicated and clear later)

list i have read but not really into it:
  • Creme de la creme
  • The butler did it
  • Fields of asphodel
  • A kiss from death
  • Vampire regent
  • Soul stone war
  • Werewolves series (i stopped after the first one)
  • Luminous underground
  • Top villain
  • Restore, reflect, retry
  • Bootlegger
  • Blackstone academy
  • New witch in town
  • Superstition (i haven't finished this one, even though i can't get into it, i like how they write the mc)
  • Paranormal preparatory school
  • Donor
List i want to read:
  • bastard of camelot
  • The exile rewrite
  • Gathering more energy to continue superstition probably..

There's probably more...
I've highlighted the titles which i think it has 'empty MC' but i put it in the list regardless..

The first IF that came to mind is Infamous MC, where the absence of their parents plays a significant role.

There's also Whiskey Four MC and After Dark MC.
In After Dark, you can choose one of three traits that affect the difficulty in apocalyptic setting: being deaf, wearing glasses, having anxiety, or being a smoker

I've read whiskey four and i really love it as the MC have serious bad luck there haha.. And infamous is so famously mentioned everywhere i wasn't so interested but now that you mentioned about parents absence i might give it a go..

And wow.. After dark sounds so interesting as i'm a sucker for imperfect mc.. Thankss!

I think you should try The Nascent Necromancer

Overrated and doesn't deserve to be mentioned everywhere. I advise against reading. Unless you like being treated like trash. I understand the appeal of IFs with unlucky, sad MCs sometimes, but in this case the author's approach is just wrong.

Depends on how "being treated like trash" here, and since i don't know what's happening inside infamous i won't judge so early and if i really don't like the content i can still stop reading anytime i want..

I understand very well how it feels to be rubbed the wrong way by the author.. It happens a lot when i read drink your villain juice and yet it still managed to stay in my "liked" list just simply because i like the concept of hating MC's own power..

And the other? It's staying in my "cannot get into it" list..

I also meant the clear favouritism towards ROs (some of them at least) which should absolutely not happen in interactive fiction, imo. The abbreviation 'MC' means what it means for a reason...

But if you want to try 🤷‍♀️

I'll still want to see it myself regardless.. But thanks for the warning..
