Both really if you really are fully allied yes you will defend each other and also yeah trade with each other.
Now it also depends on the clan heads what they decide ofcourse marriage is the strongest way like making your siblings or cousins marry into another clan or getting your siblings or cousins married with the other clan's members as they join your clan.
