My gaming habits this year have been unlike any other. One of the reasons why is the shear amount of demos that I’ve played. Most years I can count them on one hand but this year I’ve played nearly 50. These are three of my favs from the last couple of weeks. @esotericebbofficial is extremely up my alley. The writing, art, UI and systems all work in a particularly silly harmony that makes me so excited for more. Merry Crisis by @monsoongamestudio allows for more character customization(in terms of player character gender & sexual orientation and that of its potential love interests) than most games. It made me laugh, say, “oooOoo” aloud at some flirty comments and melt while looking at the dogs. Pieced Together by @glowfroggames bringing the wholesome puzzle narrative energy that I’ve found myself craving lately. It’s puzzle-lite, which is perfect for me, and so far has relatable story telling, rich colors, and cute stickers. Huh, why is the author migrating?

Not certain, but from what I can assume the author has managed to grow a decent following of people from their College Tennis Origin Story and Merry Crisis demos, and probably wants to start publishing without the COG overlords taking massive paycuts when they finally finish them. Especially since they get a pretty penny from Kofi and can probably see how much they can make solo, and grew comfortable enough with coding that they're also diving into visual novels.

Once you have an audience obsessed with your characters, confidence and a influx of money you don't need to share, I can only imagine that self-publishing looks a whole lot more attractive. Especially since you don't need to follow somebody elses rules.

Summary:

Gifted is a high fantasy story about classism, neurodiversity, the elitism of academia, and the consequences of being pronounced gifted. Content warnings will include turbulent family dynamics, questionable ethics regarding the use of magic, fantasy violence and morbid humor & discussions of death.

Gifted is inspired by german and spanish geography and architecture, with fashion inspirations from classic high fantasy settings and drawing from the Victorian era.

When going about your usual day, you end up finding a mysterious brass key hidden in a drawer. Orphaned, and with little else to lose, you search for the lock the key belongs to. When the key ends up leading to your own home's basement, you begin to wonder what your mom was hiding--a feeling that triples when you end up stumbling through a mirror, and wake up in a cave on the other side.
