I decided to play "Mother Masss Murderer" (released in the Tales app as "The Pernicious Panacea"). And damn, it's bad...
I wondered why this app (Tales) was so unpopular, to the point where I had to download the APK from APKPure. One minute into the game, I learned why: DIAMONDS TO MAKE CHOICES; the bane of all IF apps aside from HG/CoG. The usage of diamonds is pretty heavy in this game. They're expensive. I didn’t play other Tales games so I can’t tell if they’re as expensive in those too, or just this one. But you start in the app with 10 diamonds. The first premium choice costs 5 (and it LITERALLY adds nothing of value). The next one is 15 (also nothing of value). These choices have ZERO effect aside from slightly different option text, and they’re all about using MAGIC, which I find weird, because isn’t that kind of the main point of the game??? You being a SERIAL KILLER MAGICIAN??? Why make the choices directly related to the game's plot premium????
Tales also has a key system to unlock chapters. You only start with 5, so I only had access to the first 5 chapters unless I bought more. I’m not wasting any money on this BS, so I decided to stop after Chapter 5.
The story is really bad. Your mother hates you after your sister drowned, and she blames you. You're a vice-captain of a village, using your position to kill and kidnap people It’s a medieval fantasy genre, so there are many other races, and one RO is a half-goblin, for example. Now, the killing part is TERRIBLY done. Your first victim is a bakery owner named Margo, but there is literally no description of killing/kidnapping or anything similar. The game just uses a flashback about you approaching her, and you have ZERO agency on what to do with her (what methods, kill/spare/etc). You can at least choose your motivation. There are 3: blackmail her for money, kill her because she knows alchemy/poison making and you see her as a threat, or blackmail her for sexual favors. After choosing the motivation, the flashback ends and the only thing there is is a brief synopsis of the next chapter that practically implies you’ve kidnapped her to keep her as a *** slave/for money/killed her (depending on the motive you chose). Being the vice-captain of the village, the first 5 chapters are just the MC playing along with the investigation of Margo's disappearance alongside other ROs to find out what happened to Margo, with the MC already knowing what happened. Again, there is ZERO agency on choosing what you did to her specifically, your methods, if you cleaned up the crime scene to not leave clues, etc. The game is VERY linear.
The writing is... bad... I didn’t really like it. Few dialogues, and rushed descriptions. In Chapter 5 (the final chapter for free users), you kidnap your mother, but right before you can torture or kill her, there’s a flashback and the chapter ends. Looking at the game’s statistics I also found it funny that the more the game progressed, the fewer people played it.
There are some things I liked. First of all, the concept, it was executed poorly, but playing as a serial killer is VERY interesting on paper. There’s only one WIP I know where you’re a serial killer (What Lovely Bones, a dead WIP). Theoretically there are things in the game that would make Fallout 2's evil path blush, and I admit I was partly interested in that since most WIPs only let you act like a goody two-shoes. But in execution, there isn’t anything out of the ordinary from your average edgy WIP.
