Stories that left you disappointed for a reason

I think War of Heirs (rip) had a route where you could romance your first cousin as a male MC. You could still play it in the Dashington archive here, but I doubt the writer is ever coming back.

Bastard of Camelot, with the Dragon bestie being an RO for some reason. Still don't get why people requested that, or why Llamagirl fulfilled said requests. The game is already stuck in the childhood stage as it is, and we haven't even met all the LIs yet to have a rewrite adding another.

Okay so war of heirs is disappointing because with the way some of y'all talked about it i thought the wip already had the incest route but no it barely even got out of the metaphorical womb of IFs (A prologue and 1 Chapter)

Anyways IF authors like to dip into that mature themes nowadays but honestly I think most of em either hold back on the gas pedal because of purity culture or they only like the superficial themes like it's an aesthetic so we end up having mature IFs that's better off as shoddy erotica

I don't even know why it was even requested in the first place. All I wanted was to have a dragon companion with varying personalities depending on what you choose and said dragon being your only constant anchor in the presence of a pretty dim childhood but nope some readers on Tumblr:"Can this whole a** dragon be an RO?😭
I would like to know the thought process behind this but knowing and seeing a handful of if's and the outlandish asks on Tumblr I just consider it the norm at this point.

That kinda kills the whole point of an IF. Like, if no matter what I pick the MC’s still just some messed-up addict surrounded by even worse, toxic ROs, then what’s even the point? If you wanna write a problematic MC, cool, but if choices don’t actually change anything about them, might as well just make it a book 🤨

Funnily enough, I think what the author of can't save your love has (from what I've understood) won't even make that much fun of the book either, because conflict and contrast are your friend if you strive for drama E.g. if we went analytically from the starting point of can't save your love game, we'd get: MC is in a toxic codependent relationship, exacerbated by the fact that both MC and their lover are addicts. Realistically:
- they can stay with their lover. Such relationships usually have a downward trajectory so it's either a) escalating toxicity or b) route of them both getting better or them realising they are messing up and both doing the work. And yes, that will mean ditching the substance abuse (which the author mentioned is never happening with R. Actually it's my biggest gripe with R, because I could forgive a fictional character for cheating but not for refusing to ditch addiction — irl both are an instant deal-breaker for me)
- MC leaves after toxicity escalates. They can either a) end up in another toxic relationship, as it is pretty typical for ppl who don't have a lot of healthy experiences or b) end up in a good one. How it goes from points A and B here depends on whether MC themselves is willing to change (e.g do they mess up a nice relationship because they are a mess?)
As far as I surmised, the author decided to ONLY go with path A in both cases, so they'll more likely than not end up with a very one-note game because it won't offer you any experiences that are meaningfully different.

It was another BOC/KAE aka never ending rewrites that never got out of the childhood arc. Even had three different versions like KAE.

Who has read "To Ashes You Shall Return"?
Why in the f*cking inferno would I want to be forced to read about a melodrama of a reanimated protagonist who is decaying and becoming an immortal skeleton, and then an undying ash who can't move and can't speak to her romance interest as she fades away?
I want the protagonist to be fixed so she can "has" it.

Because it's so "Oh! Dedicated to my most beloved! Oh my gave, my wedding bed, my household underground and eternal cell!", that it reaches the levels of" [Don't] Wake Me Up™" kind of annoyance.

And yet, ypu know what's excellent about it? The con that the player is "allowed to play the first three chapters for free," thinking that he (or she) will revive the protagonist by managing the humanity indicator.

But alas! Whoever's bought it, their money's gone to "good use"!

Im sure the author was trying to do something poetic about it lol but it's one of those IFs that would be better off as a book like the soul stone wars

Could be that they saw a certain npc blacksmith in the story has a dragon spouse, leading to them (unfortunately not mistakenly) thinking author is fine with bestiality and thus the floodgate opens. Now here we are. Like this IF couldn't get any worse 😑 it's not that the writing itself is bad, though it's not that good either, but there's just something off about it — something annoying. It's all very offensively... bland

Because nothing ever happens. Like there's clearly things happening in the background but the actual storyline itself is so bland and being stuck in the childhood arc isn't helping. BoC would've benefited with skipping the childhood phase completely and starting off with Mordred as a knight. A lot of the bloat could be summarized in a choice or two.

Also I swear all the last updates are just "another part of ch5"... "more ch5"... "you can screw your dragon now"... "more ch5"...
Also idk all those friendship scenes make Mordred's childhood not seem all that horrific? Like it doesn't feel like they're being particularly excluded from anything. What am I supposed to want revenge for lol.

I’d like to share my thoughts… and I’m really curious to hear yours about this in ZESH. So, here we go:

It’s pretty strange how Kevin doesn’t seem to respect Madison’s romantic relationship with the MC. I mean, he flirts with her (sometimes even right in front of the MC), stares at her, and stays close to her with obvious ulterior motives. And of course, there’s that photo of Madison he keeps with him… as we see in Part 4 of the game.

I’ve also always found Madison’s reactions to all this a bit odd. Even though she loves the MC and insists that Kevin is “just a friend” and nothing more, I can’t help but notice how much she cares about Kevin — and, honestly, it feels like she cares *too much* for just a friend (if you know what I mean).

To me, Madison has always given off the impression that deep down, she has some unresolved feelings when it comes to Kevin. Maybe she’s even a bit torn between the MC and Kevin? JUST MAYBE, MAYBE...a little maybe. I think it’s implied, but not outright stated in the game. I don’t know… it’s all kind of confusing 😂

What do you guys think?

I just remembered this and i'm sure people here have said it but fields of apshodel and blood of the living has such a great premise but terrible execution and it's all because the author writes dialogue as if they've never been socialize to normal people instead of chronically online people whose entire identity is just their orientation/gender like that game is the reason why i started doubting if COG even actually had editors

Relationship in ZESH is confusing, I tried romancing Jaime once, but then it's shown that he kissed Lopez in the dance party while already being in a relationship with MC and the whole thing just threw me off, don't know what I did wrong since I always make sure to turn down Lopez's insistent advances. Tried to romance Bailey, but then there's Brody. Kelly? Parker's into her obviously. Woody's the best RO, just have to make sure he doesn't die on the hill battle. And Jillian can romance teen MC, and have a child from him 😶

... that's just... like girl... 🤨

At least let us participate in the tournament or something, but instead we get more family drama without any fun. Yey
