Stories that left you disappointed for a reason

The defensiveness and the username are what led me to believe this. If the username wasn't aggressive, like the author when they're upset, then I wouldn't have ever thought it was the author, friend of theirs and or another author. People in this thread have assumed accounts are authors for way less. Another hint for me is that iirc the defender also assumes a lot of other peoples finances just like the author. It comes from a place of privilege where in the authors words, it's only $5. Different currencies exist and not everyone is able to freely spend $5. Regardless of whether or not these people want to pay for their patreon, many of them cannot. It could just be a fan who spewed the same talking points in defense of them and promptly left but it's not a big deal. Just posting something I thought about.
TBH it would explain why they got so defensive when I said that money shouldn't be your only motivation when it comes to writing.

tbh I feel like more are writing for attention (likes / comments) than money. Then they see that attention can be converted into money via patreon followers... But it does feel odd to see a new author with a new WiP with a single chapter posted already launch a patreon.
Many (most?) would likely not keep at it if there's no attention.

It was another make 1 chapter. Go patreon release s1htty smut, lore and romance tidbids once in a month and earn money type shill. We have a lot of them these days.

Daoimmerser, cultivatoranon, nicky(even though I hate poma) and numberedentity are the only exceptions who keep up the grind despite having a patreon and decent success. Else ripping off your patrons has become a norm.

Pretty much, yeah

I think it was the God-Cursed author? But I might be misremembering
She made a big post on tumblr afterwards and the demo password was changed to something like "itsonly4fuckingdollars"
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA yeeeaaah, it was that bich aight :ROFLMAO: Tell me you made a fake account on a pirating website to be a little *****, without telling me you did it:ROFLMAO:

Nah but really, I do wonder: if no money and no attention, how many would continue writing just because they like the process and want to tell their story?
Pre patreon era authors used to do that and mainly depended on final sales for money.
That was unironically when we got the most gems and most releases every year. After patreon's success we have more wips than ever and barely any yearly releases.

I think L was actually talking about this at one point:unsure: And personally, I don't even think it's the money, but rather the attention, though tbf money is the case for a majority of writers

That's true, because IFs back then were considered like regular games. You wanted to profit off of it? You have to make the whole thing
But with the rise of Wayhaven, CC and others, yeah, they made the blueprint for this bs

But to answer your question, I think maybe a tiny handful of authors, who are either the older ones who came before the whole patreon thing, or the ones truly passionate about it

...might also feel like failures next to the big ones pulling in a ton of attention, and money off patreon smut.
World ain't fair, man. and audiences are also a part of the problem
Unfortunately, this is true. I can just imagine if you were to put your heart and soul into it, only to be sidelined by the most generic, tiktok smut imaginable, or the ones who are already hoarding all the attention to themselves, not wanting to help out the smaller creators.
As you said, the world ain't fair, and audiences are most definitely a big part of that problem

This did come up from time to time in the community. Mostly not out in the open, though. That we have a bunch of big authors reblogging each other (and maybe some friends), and then there's everyone else. That's if said big authors don't just disappear to their patreons.
I would go as far as to say it doesn't feel much like a community at all, but a bunch of cliques maybe.
As for the audiences... Generic is popular, tropes are popular, smut is as always king. People read for easy self-gratification. I do not foresee any of this changing.

Daoimmerser writes shitty slop THOUGH.

Naturally. The only accounts that ever helped new people are the official Interact IF tumblr account, and L while he was there. Everyone else is acting like cliques, only promoting friends and people who enter, in L's words, a sect that is the discord server for "if writers" on discord.
And yeah, generic is popular and all that, because they are a bunch of braindead retards. Though, for me it is as they say, hope dies last, so I have faith that things will change, but how we will come to that point, that is yet to be seen

Daoimmerser might write slop but he has got one thing right. It is a shameless power fantasy and I am all for it. Plus weekly updates for both public and patreon. That puts him ahead of 99% of authors there.
Honestly, same. As I mentioned a couple of times by now, if a world where every other if is you as an mc being a little *****, in this one you can be just overpowered to all hell, and I love it
