Stories that left you disappointed for a reason

I feel like accusing authors of making fake accounts on here to defend themself is a bit much. There are going to be plenty of fans who come on here to defend their favorite author, especially one who has mentioned this site before. (And just look at the tumblr, clearly many of their fans feel the same.) So I don’t feel like it’s proper to say for certain that X author made Y account to defend themselves.

Unless there’s something I’m missing lol

I also don’t inherently think that writing to get interactions is a terrible thing. Unless it’s obvious that they’re making false promises or are in some way deceiving the reader. I do get why people would want authors who just focus on the story, just that it’s unrealistic as a human species

Wasn’t gonna really delve into the whole whether or not big authors should support smaller authors, but if small authors are smaller because they’re niche in the first place, people with bigger audiences might not recommend because, well, it’s not their niche

Honestly, except for the authors who are clearly writing for the profit, are we not exaggerating things a bit? Maybe I’m just softer on authors who write for attention than the ones cheating money out of people

Side Note: The cultivation writers are definitely not the only ones with a Patreon and decent success who are not ripping people off. LOL

Now the question everyone is wondering… which author are you?

And this is also meh. The fans and authors in question are both at fault, so them coming here or not has nothing to do with anyone on here. That's the first thing.
Second, no one said that it's bad to make something for attention, but what you said next is just false. At least, it is false in many, many cases.
Many of the writers that we **** on here are deceiving people, and why would it be unrealistic to focus on one thing?
Take a look at those OG authors. Fallen Hero, Tally Ho, that Werewolves saga one. All of those are solely focusing on that one project.
No one's saying that they can't do other stuff too, but the problem is that most of the new authors just completely disregard their original works, and only focus on patreon bs, and some other **** that they'll abandon as well.
And I mean, just because it's not their niche, doesn't mean that they can't give a shoutout. Be like, hey, this looks interesting, so if you want, go check it out. It takes them no effort or time, but it could mean everything to that new writer who is starting out.
So yeah, we are not exaggerating anything, since 97% is doing it solely for the profit, and they do so by scamming readers

(Sorry I’m not sure which part you’re referring to is false because I said a lot of things lmao)

Also is there a setting to turn off the censorship? I dont know what “Many of the authors that we **** on here…” means so I can’t comment on it

As for the rest, I still think it’s an exaggeration that “most new authors” and “97%” of them are doing it for profit/scamming readers. Do I think there are a large amount of scammers and people out for profit? Yes. Do I think there’s that big of an amount or that the amount is the majority? No. (Not saying what I say holds any gospel either however)

Also, of the new authors that I follow and support, most of them don’t even have patreons or other forms or monetary support. (A couple have Kofis for people who want to donate a little). Honestly, I’m mostly writing this in defense of the newer authors, who aren’t scamming, aren’t doing it for money, but tend to get dragged into these conversations like they are (and honestly if they aren’t being dragged into it and it’s just me seeing things that aren’t being said, my bad LOL).

But yeah, I kind of just wanted to hmmm, remind the room that there are authors whose worst crime is wanting people to interact with stories? This is a place to complain so like I didn’t say anything before, but I just felt like it got too much

Re Niche topic: yeah sure but that depends on a lot of things. One, the author needs to know it exists, and two, the author at the very minimum needs to think that this is something they want to promote.

It’s like, if the author doesn’t know this niche exists, they can’t promote it right? Or maybe they did see a couple small authors, but the niche topic is…okay I want to make an example but I don’t know what topics are “niche” and what are not, so here’s an example, NOT saying these are niche or that these are my opinions

Author X, is a popular author who write superhero stories. Happens to see Small Author Y who writes Isekai Reincarnation in a idk Otome Game.

Author X might not even know what Author Y is talking about, can’t really vett it for the same reason.

Now it’s entirely fair to say, “Author X could still give them a shoutout anyway!” Which yeah true, but how many small authors can they shout out before their audience drowns it out, and I bet you if they do this consistently their community will go “instead of shouting out the creators, can’t you focus on your own story?? Why are you reading others and not working on yours?” (Woah am I the one making generalizations now?)

Even though I say this, the bigger problem is to how to get niche stories even noticed by bigger authors probably

Some authors posted their complaints on the WIPs thread and then expressed their anger on tumblr

It's no exaggeration. Writers are funded by their readers via patreon or kofi. In other words, people pay them so that they can buy a laptop, invest in artwork or audio, or purchase anything else they need to finish their game

Writers of interactive fiction work for their readers because that’s where their income comes from. The only problems are the lack of updates to their games and the staggering amount of side stories or lore which it's an insult their fans. Nik (A502) has a patreon and updates their demo once a year. Is that fair?

Edit: can you imagine paying for five years on patreon, and then having to pay for the finished version too?

I forgot that part. It seemed like someone was sitting on the thread waiting to defend the author...regardless of who it was. Correct me if I'm wrong but the amount of time between the posting, when it was reacted to here, and when the person defending them responded was too quick.

Exactly. Unless I am given access to patches on patreon and eventually the complete game then I'm not subscribing. I'm not paying for the game again. I can think of only one Visual Novel dev I know of who still has you pay even when you're part of patreon and have access to patches. I know IF is different but that still confuses me that someone could pay for years, adding up to the price of your game and more but still has to pay and doesn't even get access to patches (that you can download).

Dunno if this is the right place to complain( Not really a complaint more like an observation) about this or not but I wish the dev of Our Life wouldn't promise release dates for the game(Like its been changed a least 3-4 times now) when they're no where near ready.

1- Steam page said 2024 ( I swear it said 2024, but could be wrong)
2- the official trailer said fall 2025
3-2026
4- specified only the first 2 steps would release in November 2026 and the rest between 2027-2028

And I honestly think it will be changed again. I just don't see them being able to make it to the estimated November Update this year/ or at the very least the update wont have everything done.
So far they have the prologue and 3 moments finish, and if we are gonna get full moment updates on the beta (as said on Tumbler) starting this month, than the other 7 moments would finished by November but then that leaves the epilogue undone-which usually takes 3 months to finish as seen on the beta. And that's only if the full moment updates start this month.

Like I know some people find having no release date annoying, but I think its better than having to constantly change it, further damaging peoples trust, like I saw more people express disappointment/distrust when the roadmap came out in Jan this year and I think it'll be worse if they change it again.

From what I can tell she really wanted to get a high word count after finding out Our Life BA didn't have all that many words compared to AA? Visual Novels so for Our Life NF she's hoping to have much longer prologues and chapters. My first issue is that it took 3? years for the prologue and step 1 to be finished. She also keeps adding things that don't matter like useless requests from patrons, school clubs (which Qiu and Tamarack will not even be a part of and theres many of them), options for Tamarack and Qiu or both to be jealous even though she says thats not canon...so why add it? I'm probably missing more. So, yes. She's behind by a lot because she didn't expect it to take this long. Another issue is her rushing through Step 2 just for her to say...okay now I actually have to make sure it's okay to release???!! Because she promised by the end of this year that Step 1 and 2 would be available to purchase.

(Edit: I don't want anyone to read this and think I hate GBPatch or anyone involved with the game. I'm just disappointed.)

I know she never promised this but a lot of people also had their expectations set for 2 romances plus a side romance route via Renee and it did seem like at least at the start of the development she was leading people on, thinking that Renee would actually be a romance. And also admitted to even commissioning assets for Renee's route. She only stopped writing it when she realized the game was taking much longer to write and code than she thought it would. I understand why she cut it but I know it upset some.

I'm just hoping that they add another Derek/Baxter type DLC. Two love interests and both are boring.

I didn't know about Renee assess, ill might go and look for it in Kemono/Tumbler. But yeah I don't blame peoples disappointment, especially when she talks about the 'what if's' of the hypothetical route- probably feels like salt in the wound for those liking Renee

I too don't want people taking me bringing this up as hate cus I actually think the games are pretty cool and fairly unique structure.

But yeah I think the problem is just adding to many things- poly (It wasn't going to be included originally), decorative moment menus (like with the stickers), unnecessary options (like some of them are just the same reaction, just worded differently) and multiple setting additions.
I don't think it was a good idea adding all that when this game has 2 main LI's, more side characters, more branching paths and multiple character arcs/developments.

I also don't think it helps when your the only writer on the project ( Though I can understand wanting it to be more consistent, perfectionism or not wanting to butt heads with another writer)
