I'm also hoping for something similar. I don't know how, but I certainly want an MC who uses both traditional and Body Refining cultivation methods. This is a route I've always liked in novels such as King of Gods, A Will Eternal and Martial World.
After reading this thread and seeing all the takes here I decided to post what's on my mind about how Poma is shaping around.
I, too, was sad and even angry about the road the story decided to go on due to all of reasons. To be brief, my anger was directed on the fact that, a lot of lore, intrigue and side characters started to feel sidelined for the sake of introducing the shitstorm that came with Tang Wei all the way back in the expedition.
I liked to theorize about big players of the story like Bohai, trying to think about their general motivations and place on the political board, how the rivalry with He Clan will be handled etc.
And now, out of nowhere, I was introduced to a character of Lady Butterfly who, not only is annoying to deal with in general, introduced a lot of twists and lore which made all the suffering protagonist and side characters went through, all the time of trying to figure out what's going on in a bigger picture sort of.. pointless?
So much personal and overall history felt like it went down the drain due to the introduction of this insane immortal stalker who was the "master manipulator" behind everything, and there was literally nothing I could do about it.
As someone said it already, it drained any motivation your character might have had, and I had the similar feeling where I'm just an observer of the story, simply reacting to things happening - introduction of even more cultivators like Yue Fang didn't help, it felt like, well, my safe space was invaded if that makes sense.
But after some time has passed and now that I replayed the demo, read all the new events and character interactions - I think I understand what author is going for.
If he plans to do what I think (judging from the discussions on the server), all the reveals and lore drops about the outside world actually make pretty good sense for the story.
I think, what's gonna happen is that our world will somehow fuse with Celestial Realm, basically starting a "soft reboot" to a lot of things, and I think it will be for the better.
It will allow our character to actually start to properly cultivate, without erasing the world (that will no longer feel like a stepping stone you must grow past (since it's now a part of the bigger picture) or the characters you might have grown attached to, while also introducing an actual interesting big conflict, with different factions that invaded
your home.
I don't know, it might sound like me just coping with the new direction, but I think at this point I will just let Niki cook and create what he wants to create - just because it's different from my vision of my "perfect game" doesn't make it lesser. But this is just my take on it, feel free to disagree.
