Eh it’s just the fandom/playerbase. The wholesome struggle doesn’t work for them. Like put Ai in another fandom and she’s probably a favorite she did grow in popularity tho. I still won’t romance her. They hate her ideals and because she’s relatively weak she’s supposed to just shut up and take it. Remember the COG forums long heated discussion people even bringing up real life examples. Let's be real the real reason Mei doesn't get hate is because there's nothing to hate on. She's blander than unseasoned chicken with the personality of a sheet of paper. Her entire character can be summarized as evil GF. If you were to swap her with her brother He Gang, nothing changes because they have almost the exact same personality, Gang is just more in your face about it.
Go say that in the discord I’m curious. The real reason is because the cultivation space tends to lean more edgy most of the time, so they’d prefer Mei over the good naive Ai. That’s all it is literally, if He Gang was female and kept sane character still did the stuff involving MC Aunt would most likely be a fan favorite there’s a reason why “I can fix her/him” type memes type trend. Since Poma leans heavily male playerbase if He Gang became a RO option they would burn it down just how it is. You seen it here with the Female Vs Male Ruo they can make exceptions. That’s all it is, this genre leans towards a certain crowd, just how a slice of life romance would too.
I think this is throwing from one extreme to another. Mei is bad characters because she is typical bad GF, Ai is good character because she is typical good GF.
I can get hate Mei because of how much Niki love her and adore her with content, unlike any other character. I can get hate on Ruo as rival, which consist only of endless glaze, without point or reason. But I can't get hate because of their character, they were created like this.
Eh, you can hate on a character because their are bad written characters, you can criticize them. Most ROs lack depth and Niki himself knows that. He’s getting better and improving more. There is extreme but Mei is a shallow one dimensional character, but some love it some hate it. I used to love it until I woke up and realized. No character is immune to criticism.

Eh think you underestimate fanbases. I’ve seen some fanbases justify bad people and won’t certain people to be romanced who’s done worse. That’s where the meme “if evil why hot” comes from. Remember at the beginning of Poma how hated Mei was? And slowly she became the favorite, people will justify anything. Also I didn’t mean edgy in a bad way, just some cultivation fans are nuts and cringe. Maybe it’s changed but few years back in my teenage years when I used to read cultivation novels, those comment sections were just full of edge lords.
The problem is that all RO is poorly written characters. At this point we basically choose archetypes, with little to no depth outside of it. It just frustrating how much people her

Idk I feel like Ai somewhat changed and started to grow before everything. I will say this I only promote hating on Ruo, but if Caihong is removed Mei she’s joining my hate.
