Stories that left you disappointed for a reason

I was in an Otome server and I got called an ******* for not being interested in Touchstarved because it felt too corporate.
It feels like they're combining everything they think their potential audience would like for maximum sales and attention. So i've never even played the demo. Something just felt off to me the first time I saw the itchio page and read that there were ex Riot devs because while I don't know much about Riot nor want to, I know that the AA and AAA gaming space is very corporate even among average employees.
I decided to give it a chance and promptly quit after the "character creation" intro where you're required to pick a guy to romance WITHOUT even having met them in game yet.
I've seen that in The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe)...which also decided to release for money and have people wait for it to be completed and in bad mobile otome games.

Touchstarved is a baby of ex Nyx Hydra devs. I know Nyx Hydra had ton of issues within, but to say that the devs who now working on Touchstarved don't have issues - would be a lie. Big red flag was when they announced something along the line " Kickstarter money not enough - we gonna also add patreon milking machine for our news/updates". Classic sh*t. I liked Arcana and Last Legacy so i kind of hyped for touchstarved by default. I will be very disappointed if they sh*t themselves again

Those are some of the people who worked on Arcana? Even less interested. The game was very corporate with the gem system and the writing was not worthy of spending that much money on a game. I've also heard there was drama with some of the people who worked on Arcana but again, I never played it because I saw that abysmal gem system and could only stand playing it for about an hour.

I never paid a dime to that game lmao Thanks to modders
I still replay Arcana sometimes. Still mourn last legacy. Unfinished and abandoned eh

Also that app to wich hydra sold their own apps, Dorian - is such a f*cking dogshit. I also saw the some cog author don't remember the name. I think it was Zachary Sergi.
It so cringe. With the app that supposed to be inclusive there's not even pronoun option in any of the **** they sell. If you think gems and coins in arcana and such is bad wait till you see how much they charge in dorian for few lines or badly written smut

I can't believe all these VNs mentioned here nd which I have gobbled up eyes ago from desperation are still stuck up in the same hell hole of unending development progress, I also share the sentiment abt andromeda six and lunaris games, they were boring for me at least.
this entire talk of kick-starts is making me think of touchstarved since I follow them on Tumblr. I saw many negative and apprehensive opinions of the first chapter feeling lacking nd luck luster in retrospect of what was promised to them concerning the romance routes and the mc since everything felt rushed nd underdeveloped.

tbh, the only VNs I have actually have played years ago nd finished nd found mildly entertaining and that much impacting are Reverie ebon light nd perfumare.

No bc literally same!! I absolutely ate that sh!t up back then, hook line and sinker lmao. I was way too naive thinking all these overly ambitious VN were ever gonna get finished and assuming they had more substance to them than the devs wanting people to obsess over and talk about their OCs lol. It took a while, but I've certainly learned my lesson with all these unfinished VNs and WIPs and am now much more selective with what games I follow and support lol, can't believe I wasted all that energy supporting projects that were basically dead on arrival.

Granted a lot of those did die but yes it's wild hearing that some of them are still in development hell, Twin Coves especially was crazy to me. Like for example Andromeda Six also takes ages for its updates but at least the game is gonna get finished (just did a quick check and it seems like it's near the end?). Idk how long it's been since that first time I ever stumbled upon the Twin Coves tumblr in the early days but it feels like aaaages ago omg 😭 I honestly thought it had died and been forgotten with the rest of these VNs I mentioned in my previous post, but I looked it up and apparently they had a kickstarer and stuff?? And like omg, apparently there is still only a demo and yet there is a bunch of DLCs planned from what I am seeing in the kickstarter stretch goals?? 😭 Like girl..... finish the damn game first 💀And yeah the game clearly seems to be in dev hell. Cool concept and could have been interesting but like with so many of these projects, the devs bit off way more than they can chew. Like it's just ridiculous when you think about it because if the creators had more sense and were more realistic with their scope, by this point they could have had a finished game, hell they could have had 2 finished games even or at the very least a second game in progress. But instead their game is basically stuck in purgatory lmao.

I feel like in a lot of these cases the project starts out as a genuine product of passion, then it gradually turns into an unintentional grift with all these patreons and Kickstarters, then the devs see how much they can milk this cash cow and the grifting becomes intentional lol. Also just sth I noticed just now when looking them up but it's funny how all these games (Twin Coves, A6, Lunaris's Games) have their itchio comments disabled lmao, probably to reduce the amount of people criticising them or at least inquiring about the game progress 💀

Ahh yes, I've heard of Touchstarved, that seems to be quite popular but by the time it took off I had lost a lot of interest in VNs since I had become obsessed with IFs instead. It's weird because in theory, it feels like a VN specifically tailored for me lol. Gothic setting? Vampires? I mean hell yes, two of my favourite things, sign me tf up. But idk, I can't really explain it but it's always felt kind of... off and souless to me, in a way, I had that feeling every time I looked it up. As @miaomi above said and explained better than me, it felt too corporate and I think that's a part of it. I did not know about the negative feedback lmao but I'm feeling vindicated rn anyway 🤭 I'm reading all these replied about Touchstarved in the thread rn and omg I'm shook that Touchstaved is apparently made by ex Nix Hydra devs (who made The Arcana) but suddenly it all makes so much sense 💀

And omg Ebon Light!!! I had not thought of this game for so long, it's been ages. I'm gonna have to go and replay it soon tbh, it's been so long since I played that it's gonna be like a new game for me haha. That's literally such a unique gem amongst the sea of unfinished VNs 😭 The game has such a cool setting, MC, ROs and it's finished most important of all lmao. And in addition to that it even has customisation for the MC!! That was the first VN I ever player that has customisation for the MC's sprite and it spoiled me lol. 👀 But yeah clearly a VN can have a good plot, interesting setting, amazing art, several ROs, and even MC customisation and... I know this is gonna come as a shock to a lot of devs but... Gasp, it can be finished!! 😱 Without kickstarer and patreon grifting!! 😱 Ebon Light you will always be an icon 🫶 I haven't heard of Reverie I think and I never got around to playing Perfumare even tho it seems cool so I'm gonna have to check them out sometime.

Also just as a side note but since I was very sassy about it lol, I wanna clarify that I have no issue with Kickstarter or patreon in general. I've kickstarted lots of things, and I've also supported plenty of projects on patreon, and I'll continue to do so. I'm a writer too so I like supporting authors, and I've also kickstarted some of my favourite games of all time. I just don't like the general patreon/Kickstarter... Culture??? (I guess lmao) in the VN and IF community, I've seen way too many things turn into a grift and milking a cash cow lol.

I don't know, I just always had a bad feeling... like when I saw the Touchstarved announcement/kickstarter I read it all and couldn't understand the hype because to me it felt corporate and insincere. It felt similar to the wording for those scam startups that are only around for about 2 years. I've been an otome fan for over 15 years and the way the game was described didn't feel like otome fans were making it, but people who saw the indie otome game market and thought it would be easy to exploit if the art was pretty.. Finding out some of the devs are ex Nyx Hydra is so crazy to me too because the game FELT like a scam!! You don't make a mobile otome/dating sim out of passion, but out of greed. And if any mobile otome/dating sim/bl devs read this, I mean that ****. You're moneygrubbing scumbags. I mean seriously if I knew those people made it I wouldn't have even launched the demo in the first place. To be clear I'm not talking about games with mobile ports that can be outright purchased, but those microtransaction-laden, ad-filled worthless waste of time mobile games designed to exploit the player.

This is just an assumption but Itchio gets spam and AI comments now and depending on the fandom the comments can start to get very weird. I remember Andromeda Six used to have a tumblr where they'd answer a lot of interesting questions but then deleted it. I do remember people were creating discourse about the game and implying things about the devs based off of nothing. The comments for OLNF are filled with little kids posting about their OCs and thoughts about the game daily as if its a forum about the game rather than a comment/review section for a VN. So limiting comments is not always a red flag for me. Andromeda Six is almost finished and then they'll work on the 18+ DLC which is apparently not small.

No, you can say it. In fact, if anyone knows of any other IF writers or VN devs who were part of these apps in any way post them please. Not for harassment but so that I can avoid them.

Like for example Andromeda Six
Now, do you know that Andromeda Six was born about the same time that When The Night Comes was? It was 2019 before WTNC was finished and revamped if i remember correctly. Its been years and the game had no real improvements aside ui and sprite changes. Pretty average story where there's like 2 characters im interested in. But hell yeah, patreon

Ah yeah that makes a lot of sense and I hadn't considered it! The bot comments and AI spam is def a problem these days. And I didn't meant to imply that disabled comments sections are automatically a red flag haha, I'm also probably a bit jaded from the Lunaris Games fiasco bc I know damn well that's why they disabled their itchio comment sections back in the day 👀

I remember the A6 tumblr too back in the day, I was following it haha! Lunaris Games also had a similar tumblr they eventually deleted, in both cases it was unfortunate because a lot of fun answers on tumblr were lost to the void. But I mean... tumblr and creating discourse/drama over nothing? Name a better duo tbh, it's hardly surprising 😭

Lmaooo yes I definitely remember it, I was there to witness it all in real time 😂 I mentioned a few other VNs that spawned around the same time (all due to the popularity of The Arcana and very clearly inspired by that) in one of my previous posts. But WTNC and A6 were the only ones that actually got finished. I don't like A6 either, the MC is too boring and I didn't like where the story was headed, it was just bland in general. But hey.... at least they're gonna finish the game I guess? 😭

I doubt all the VNs coming out at the time were inspired by the Arcana. Not discounting how popular it was but a lot of these games aren't reminiscent of The Arcana in the slightest. Especially as Andromeda Six was originally supposed to be an IF (which, I don't mind that it isn't because it probably wouldn't be almost finished by now and would have hundreds of pareon POVs if it were a IF).

I mean yeah ofc, I wasn't trying to say they were all inspired by The Arcana, it's not like The Arcana invented visual novels or something lmao. If anything, I'd consider A6 the one least relevant to that, and probably Twin Coves. I was just kinda grouping several VNs that were all created around the same time under the same umbrella bc it all happened during the peak popularity of The Arcana and several of the VNs I mentioned were very open about being inspired by The Arcana in their early days (WTNC, as well as those two dead VNs I mentioned before whose names I can't remember anymore bc it's been ages lol) and the fandoms were very enmeshed lol

And I had no clue A6 was meant to be an IF at first omg. You're probably right about the patreon POV stuff though lmao 💀

I know it's a bit of a tangent, but could anyone explain the issues with Errant Kingdom? It's come up a couple of times.

I had purchases WTNC as looking the the review on Errant Kingdom were terrible.

I also didn't know about this, but i know that someone from A6 team made demo for IF, it was "Ace of Spades" i think, answered some ask on tumblr and disappeared. My brains holds so much useless information lmao

Wait no omg yes I remember this!! Yes, it was exactly Ace of Spades. I never read it, but from what I remember, it died pretty quickly lol. Didn't that dev also leave the A6 project? Maybe I'm just misremembering or mixing up info though. And saaame, this thread is making me remember so much random useless info lmao, like why do I have that retained in my brain still😭

AND before anyone says what I think they'll say now that more people know Andromeda Six was supposed to be an IF. I get some people on here are jaded when it comes to VNs (not referring to anyone in the thread specifically but the site as a whole) but the dismissal of VNs as a genre I've sometimes seen here is kinda confusing. I've seen people imply it but there are some here who actually think that every visual novel ever created should have just been an IF OR RPG. Which honestly just proves to me that they've never played that many VNs or understand them or the genre. Just because a game has text and reading as a primary part of its gameplay doesn't automatically mean it should be an IF. Maybe its from people who think illustrations are for children or people who need visualizations when they read and think that these games don't actually need any artwork? To them I'd just say don't play a genre you don't like. that's why I don't play MMOs or strategy games, I don't like them and any insight I have into them will be clouded by my overall dislike with playing them in general. That's why I view any critiques of VNs existing as mostly baseless as it attacks the genre as a whole rather than an particular game.

Your opinion is valid but just know I think its wrong.

This is why I'm afraid to even like any WIPs or begin to read any.
