Reading the critiques of popular IFs made me curious: what UNpopular IFs would you guys consider to be good?
My one true love, my first IF and that has never really been beaten in my eyes is Empyrean. Unique worlbuilding, stats that matter and insane variability is some segments, and a very decent one in the others. The only game I have all achievements for.

Faerie's Bargain: The Price of Business my beloved I don't think it's unpopular as much as its obscure sure the romance is pretty barebones and the characters bit bland but its vibes lore worldbuilding fairy and steampunk themes are simply immaculate. There's an cold iron steampunk faerie killing robot bounty hunter and an secret eldritch abomination romance so that's you know an major plus.

Also Tower behind the Moon I found the characters bland other then then your Ax crazy creation who I found hilarious, the plot was confusing and a bit predictable the stat menu an complete mess overall pretty medicroe but it has an special place in my heart since its the first Interactive Fiction I played and I really liked how the author designed the schools of magic and how it affected your ascension ending.

i am not sure if it is unpopular but i haven't seen it being talked about: Checkmate in 3 Moves (wip). i will always have a soft spot for it. for me, it's perfect, flawless, 100/10. another one, i think it's dead? (most probably it is, i am just being delulu, like a wife waiting for her dead husband to come back from war): The Changeling Exchange. it was a beautiful mixture of modern and fantasy genre. the covid lockdown started after i finished highschool. i discovered IFs during that time and consumed a LOT of them, but even after 5 years and not being into IFs like before, i'm still not over these two. Honourable mentions: Averno (it only exists in my memory now), Good Intentions (dead) and Project Thornheart (also dead)

Yes! I love love this one. One of the few where you can play a rich kid + running a family's corporation sounds like fun.
The author has managed to create a rather unique setting. It's a world similar to ours, but it has its own vibe. Somehow, this IF feels cosy to me. Or maybe dreamy. Hard to describe.

The only thing I always considered a flaw was the large number of ROs, so there wouldn't be enough time in the story for each of them and the romances wouldn't be very developed. But it doesn't matter anyway. There has been no news from the author for ages :/

After playing the disappointment that was Bloodlust.exe (who paywalls the playtime equivalent to a demo), I once again mourn that IF spaces are so sterile, for lack of a better word. LIs (in general but I'm talking about so called yandere and unhinged ones) either come in two flavours: The personality of wet paper cardboard or just a terrible person. The sad part is, as a yandere lover, is the lack of main character agency. The only stories that target people like myself are just straight up misery ****. You'd think with Night Road being so popular, there'd be more Julian Sims.

Pon Para. I don't see people talk about it much, but it is a good IF, i absolutely love it. Great wordbuilding, skill checks, important choices matter and of course, a good story. I can't wait for book 3 (also, Melaxu is so unintentionally funny 😭 can't wait to see my grumpy nymph 🤧🙏)

Are there IFs with yandere LIs? I’m a yandere lover, but I rarely found any IF with that, if I did it was just one of those ideas that never got a demo, or that had a beginning and that was it. Like The Brightest Stars, I think Lux was supposed to be a kind of yandere? Or worse depending on your choices. I don’t really remember, anyway, the author kept saying there would be updates, until she just deleted everything about it and gave up on the IF.

Or that Jun from SOH that people always comment on when talking about yandere characters, even though they just fall into the “terrible person” flavor anyway.

I put Night Road on my list to read, but I kept putting it off. I really need to read it now.

Stories that left me disappointed was anything by CC Hill. I had high hopes for them as they always claim to have smut but everything is always super short and fade to black. its unsatisfactory.
Which ones are super short and fade to black? Because the ones I've read never had those, short? Maybe but fade to black? Miss maem isn't afraid to put c ock and p ussy in her IFs unlike heart's choice authors

I agree. None of the ones I’ve played fade to black, don’t even remember if there’s an option for that in her games. Actually, one of the complaints from people who don’t like her games is exactly that there’s too much smut, so maybe we’re confusing the IFs? Anyway, people can complain about her IFs, but can’t say she doesn’t update, I think she’s one of the authors who updates the most and gives notice about it. Look at us, grateful for the basics lol, points for her.

The only truly disappointing thing from CCHill is she'll make 100 other stories at the side rather than completing any on going books she has like WLGYL and SOTH (though the stories do not disappoint its just that its so short it leaves a bitter taste)
It's because she keeps getting stalled by the smut like girlie pop should just read a few r18 doujins take some inspiration and then she'd be free from the erotica hell she put herself into

Tbh I feel the same way about it being unsatisfactory. I think it's more because CC isn't a native speaker so I guess I can give them a pass. The smut they made feel kinda cringy to read, the buildup to that scene feels rushed, even the supposed main attraction is also rushed. I guess a lot of authors are not comfortable writing smut, but even just focusing on the feelings when they did it without being explicit would make those scenes so much more satisfying. A lot of smut scenes in IF are like this, unfortunately. The only one example of smut scenes being well executed in IF is Ouroboros. But alas, that one hasn't been updated for more than a year 🤷
That being said, I do think CC has improved as a writer from back then.

Even though I 100% saw this coming, I'm kinda disappointed in Zorlok tbh. Three months ago, the author posted the first part of Episode 1, and said part 2 would come in August/September. Then she updated saying she was planning to post the update on September 13th if possible. Then, on the 13th, she pushed back the update to September 28th. Already here I assumed the update would never come tbh. So on the 28th I go to the Zorlok itch.io page and guess what, she's had a "family emergency" and will update as soon as she can.

I really don't want to be an ******* but all the comments on there are expressing support, etc etc, like am I the only one seeing this? If the update was done, clicking on the post button would have taken way less time than making a post about family problems. And that was 20 days ago, you're telling me that in 20 days you can't find the time to post an update that's alreaady done? I feel like she's obviously lying, if the update isn't ready she could have just said it, why lie about family emergencies?

It's true. Compare Midnight Saga and newer WIPs. There's a difference in quality. I'm not a fan of this author, but I actually enjoy Laws of Passion.
