That's why there is a phrase: "Keep Writing Even if Nobody Reads."
I mean, instead of focusing on "why no one gives us engagement", why don't they focus on their IF... Pretty sure if they release new chapters steadily, they will get engagement boost again...
If they create something just for engagement, now I know why they are slow at updating their IF...
The update is also sometimes so slow, making others lose interest too... In my view, I also got tired if I interacting with IF who rarely update...

Most of the problems with the slow updates come with the bad planning and biting more than they can chew (not to mention the "every story MUST have ROs and be more sanboxy" or whatever expectation.).

Unfortunately, most of us authors thrive with aknowledgement. With praise and attention. I think, but this is just my personal opinion, that it's a fair bargain in exchange for the content we release into the world free of charge.
^ I'd say this mindset is the problem tbh.

Just like reader's aren't entitled to be provided free content; just because you release something on the internet doesn't mean your entitled to an audience, feedback, or attention.
