What is an immediate red flag for you guys?

When an author has so many WIPs and the number keeps growing; especially when there's a new trend in IFs. And they get offended when they're asked out of concern if they can possibly finish all of these games when they update only 3 of the games very infrequently. But you're just supposed to take their word that their other 10 WIPs aren't abandoned and will updated eventually. Also, when an author advertises their work as "dark" or "dark romance" and when you play it the setting and ROs aren't "dark". At most, the setting is more realistic and the ROs are the gloomy, broody, closed-off types.
I mean, some of them do deliver, but I can't wait for them to finish all of their games😭 I'll be ****ing 60 when supernatural season 4 gets published ffs

Lol there was a time where I wanted to do my own IF's, but I knew early that I'm good as a worldbuilder and not as someone consistent and who wants to code or knows how to deal with a audience.

So I kinda archived my ideas for the time Being cause I know how bad it is to wait for new chapters or a finished IF you like a lot, and just see the development hell in real time

When a author moves from their main work to another because of writer's block only to discover that it doesn't fix their issues. I wonder if that is a tip other IF authors gave to people with writer's block? To switch to an "easier" work to retain patreon subs and traction surrounding their works instead of taking a break.

Hello Shepherds of Haven, the highest fantasy IF to ever high that is for some reason advertised as "dark". Tolkien wrote darker plots than that Feanor did nothing wrong

You could try and see how it goes? There's no need to immediately create a blog and so on. Also plenty of people that could help with coding and other advice.

I've never played a romance in ShoH yet but every time I've seen asks they all sound cute? The only one I could see being slightly dark is Croelle's.

It is given as an advice, but not to retain subs. It's specifically to take a break from one game to another to avoid burnout/block. YMMV on how helpful that actually is.
The issue is that at a certain point you're bound to run out of inspiration, and the writing process becomes more and more of a grind. To avoid the grind, one starts a new story for that bout of new inspiration. Of course, that can and will run out, too... and so the trap is set and done.

I cannot take ShoH's characters seriously due to the way the author talks about them. Especially Blade. She makes him look downright pathetic.
But I wasn't talking about romance specifically, but the story/setting in general.

True, honestly my biggest gripe will always be code anyway lol maybe I'm just lazy on that department.

"Computer, generate me a 10/10, Wildly Acclaimed IF that will make COG submit themselves to my feet as their overlord ruler, disengage security protocols, and run program"

If you wanna do it in CS - it's fairly easy. I'd say the basics on their website are enough for the basic stuff, the rest people can help you with if you ask. Quicktest/Randomtest are convenient ways to check for bugs without having to go through the game yourself.

Let's see, romance, lots of NSFW, poly, character drama, wet cat MC... and you're set to go :P

Maybe they did? Daaaaaamn, I didn't even think about this one!

I also mean to say Superstitions... I'm just slow this morning 😂
Oh yeah, superstition, so cheesy, so very much a supernatural fan fiction (do not steal) but so weirdly charming and enjoyable in what it is and what it wants to deliver lol, I can't help but to love it as well

Excatly! But hey, it's better than most of the ifs nowadays, so I say it's good. But the biggest problem is that the author decided to just not finish season 3, **** season 4, and do a complete rewrite of both season 1 and 2....

I'm a fake fan, the poser label shall be used on me now because I didn't know there has been a rewrite of the first two seasons lol. Guess I just didnt bother to check on Itchio or the author pages in years.

Eh, p0rn games perform just fine without that.
In fact, disregard previous advice and just make a p0rn game. some have better character/relationship writing than ifs do anyway
Only one I can remember is ****#ing summertime saga or that one overwatch one lol. Both have funny dialogues, people joke about the whole "Nah I'm playing for the plot guys" meanwhile I was really playing for the shites and giggles, and found myself enjoying the funny writing or plots etc lol

I have such a love hate relationship with the Superstition author and her games in general lol. I usually avoid authors that have multiple projects like her, even if I enjoy their games, because I know that's a recipe for disaster and that nothing will ever get finished. 💀 But I've been following Superstition since S1, it was one of the fist IFs I read that I really loved, and I have an odd attachment/investment into her games in general lol. I do like most of the stuff she creates (except Throne of Ashes, that's very romance heavy and none of the ROs there appeal to me). Superstition is my favourite of hers, but I also really like Sea of Stars and Insight. For the Crown and Dragon Racer were also pretty fun. You know, other than the fact that she cancels half her projects... 😐 I would have stopped supporting her or caring about her games a long time ago if I wasn't so invested and if it wasn't for a certain sense of nostalgia for Superstition lol. But sadly atp it's getting to the point where I'm losing my patience and not really caring about Superstition anymore which is sad but it is what it is 🤷‍♀️

That game has gone through an... ordeal lol. IIRC, it was first supposed to have 5 seasons.... then the author silently changed the itchio pages to say it would have 4 seasons and didn't really announce it until someone asked her about it on tumblr and she confirmed. Her explanation was that as she was writing S3, she realised the series is better off having 4 seasons because if it had 5, one of the seasons would have ended up as mostly filler. Which is like okay, understandable. Then she put S3 on hiatus and I don't even remember how long it's been anymore lol. Then she decided to rewrite S1 and S2.... and we all know what a rewrite announcement usually spells for an IF's future. 💀 But I could see the point in her justifications at least, because yeah I'd be lying if I said that S1 isn't quite rough around the edges, it's one of her first games and it shows. So I was sorta tentatively hopeful for the series and rewrites, especially because it sounded she was making some cool changes to S1. Then, if I'm not mistaken, she decided that it would only have 3 seasons, not 4 💀I'm not 100% sure if she's set on this and correct me if I'm wrong, but I think at one point she was wondering if she should leave the game with 4 seasons as planned or trim it down to 3 seasons? And I think she ended up deciding it would be 3 seasons? But don't quote me on this.

But yeah at this point I've just kinda been getting a certain kind of vibe and impression for a while by the way she talks about Superstition that she's just totally checked out and not invested in this series anymore. I honestly think she would cancel it if she could, but she probably knows she can't afford to cancel another series considering how many cancelled ones she already has and she already has a certain reputation for that lmao. Not to mention the fact that Superstition is probably her most popular series, at least from what I've seen. So she's just trying to finish it and get it over with as quickly as possible lol. But again pls no one take this as fact, this is just my impression from what I've seen over all these years I've been following her.
