I could've sworn there already was a rewrite of The Abyssal's demo, but idk, maybe it was Patreon-only, or maybe I misremember.
Still, if the demo is really shorter than it originally was, it's... quite an achievement. But if people support it on Patreon still, I guess they're happy with what they're getting ¯\_ʘ‿ʘ_/¯

No Author last Hiatus was a rewrite in 2023 so you are correct. So I’m expecting another in 2027

has anyone read the abyssal update? I really liked the idea when it started, but the demo updates have been the same demo for years. It’s even shorter than before.
It really gets me how it becomes less and less cohesive with each rewrite, too. Like, man, flashbacks are fine, but now it's just the mishmash of scenes the author included to flesh out the MC's stats. The idea for the game is so good, but the pacing is all over the place.

...also I read it and remembered just how much the random child character rubbed me wrong. I *hate* when games force you to adopt random child/pet without giving you any motivation. Like, what if my Death is cruel or indifferent? Or if they hate to interfere in mortals' affairs? Noooo, you cannot leave this random kid to their fate or give them a small blessing and send them away.

Speaking of kids, didn't the author say that for Sol-mancers there would be an option to have had a kid with Sol? You gonna tell me that Death would remember a random kid, their traitor sister, the drama sea god, but not their own child?

The kid thing got me too, I see this happen a lot, when you’re a god like figure, take care of a kid??? Is there a trope I’m missing? Even one’s where you can be a straight evil person why would I care about a random kid. The 3 I know is like you said The Abyssal, Demon, Fireforged. And Fell Star (homunculus) also okay Fell star I give a pass because you can shape the kid and the kid personality and the eating scene with the kid got me tbh. The kids with Sol plot becomes a problem when it was something supporters wanted and tbh would make it so much harder to write (not that the game will ever progress).

Project Hadea had the same problem. Like, the mc just met the kid, literally a few minutes before the others, but for some reason the crazy mercenary is expected to be their caretaker.
Oh, yeah, and you also get chewed up for 'setting a bad example for her'? I played PH long time ago, but iirc, there wasn't an option to say 'listen, I am not trying to parent the kid', right?

Tbh I think that would've been a very fun thing to explore because how often do we get MCs who are parents? Esp in epic\heroic kind of games, not slice-of-life like WLGYL. But that's also a whole unique character whom players going for non-lover Sol won't even get, so... Tbh, I think Abyssal would've benefitted from culling some RO's. E.g. keep it two divine, Sol and Amorr, plus two mortals, the priest and hmmmm idk whom to take for the 2nd mortal. Seven is waaaay too much if you are trying to juggle romance, world-building and mystic powers plot.

All in all, I think one of my biggest peeves is when IFs try to decide for you what\who your MC loves. So, best friend, pets, ward\child? If you force it upon me, I am rebelling. Like, I think it's easier with enemies because as humans we all hate when someone treats us poorly, but we all pick friends, lovers, etc based on different preferences.

But being forced sours the relationship for me.
I heavily dislike it when the MC is forced into liking any character, be it friend or family or random child (lol). I get it when it's a part of the setup/plot point, but other times it's just there because the author thinks it's cute. Well it's cute if it's something that a player chooses and wants, otherwise it's kinda annoying.

In the above examples, children are used to, for the lack of a better word, humanize an MC that might be (or appear to be) on the less humane side. Which I get the idea and purpose of, but still find boring in execution.

It happens with TV series too, like in Arcane with Jinx and Isha. Jinx, who is a very disturbed, unstable, insane individual suddenly change and become mellow like a flicker's being switched in her head because... a kid fell on her head?? That's not how that works, unless she gets a brain damage and lost some of her memories. They should've waited at least until season three after she's given sufficient character arc that's not just some sob-inducing video montage.

As for the Demon, Fireforged I think it should be given a pass too, since we can play as a full on evil demon disregarding Araya (the kid that MC adopted in a flashback type prologue that actually serves to set the stage unlike in The Abyssal where it's very random). Also, the full evil demon route is currently the only route that's been implemented on the WIP while the merciful demon route is still being cooked (for how long who knows, haven't heard a peep from the author). So yeah, it stays true to the path choices, again unlike The Abyssal where we still described as sensitive touchy feely even when we chose exclusively cold emotionless options.

Otherwise I agree very much. I really hate this adopt a kid/pet trope especially when the catalyst for MC adopting the kid in The Abyssal is just because the kid's sooo special, the kid can see us without dying and even not scared of death ooooh how unique~ blegh. I'd much rather pick up a common rascal off the streets (casual kidnapping💀) than one that is so blatantly given the star spotlight by the author because of "feels".

Great. Now I'll definitely never play this game again. When the author introduced this kid, I was hoping they'd change their mind or at least give the option to be indifferent (if the damn child has an important purpose, and *needs* to be). I even wrote them a messages about it...

In the case of Demon, Fireforged, the author said that you wouldn't have to be kind and caring towards children. Quite the opposite. And I believe her. In the current demo, there's a scene with (other) kid, and you can be cruel. And then, if I remember correctly, kill them just like all the adult villagers 🤷

I'm okay with MC having a child or pet in their care as long as I'm not forced to love them immediately and I can choose how I feel about it. In TGR you have the horse... I'm sure the author loves this character, but did she force us to love him too? No!
