Here to make a small rant on possibly my smallest pet peeve with authors and something that is kind of a non-issue because it doesnt even happen that often, but i hate it when authors use big words all the time. Especially in medieval times until the 1800's. Maybe by big words, i just mean historical words or arhaic words or whatever they're called.
I see stories like jolly good and pon para being praised, but whever i start reading them i have to stop because my head starts hurting just from trying to understand what's being said. I do like learning a few words and metaphors from the stories I read, because it helps with my english (not my first language), but goddamn these types of stories got me googling whole sentences lmao. And it just makes me dissapointed, because i enjoy reading about these time periods the most but i cant even understand anything. And I'm not sure how i can even learn those words or phrases because I don't see them being used anywhere else.
Despite my criticism of the relics series and golden rose, I actually understood what's being said most of the time and learned new stuff! But with the games above, I just look at the page blankly, thinking "I have never seen these letters in that order before" lol
I obviously don't blame the authors for it, and again, this isnt even a real issue. they're using those words correctly and it makes sense for the story (most likely).
i'm sure native speakers understand and enjoy the stories, but it makes me frustrated in myself more than anything. any non eglish speaker feeling the same?
