Stories that left you disappointed for a reason

also this. if the author dislikes power fantasies why did they make the MC a God. like just make them a merchant or a normal sorcerer, or the next Keeper or ANYTHING ELSE. a lot of the plot couldve stayed the same ! when you make your character so canonically Important you're gonna have to give a lot of thought to power scaling. you can't have any rando off the street be stronger than, well, the street the rando is in
Funny because I think it was on the discord after the reveal of Mc being the NM. Someone asked maybe leading up to book 2 will the MC when they get used to their new abilities and stuff be able to protect themselves and the author and all her soldiers starting going crazy at the person like you don’t need to be the strongest you have the ROs there for a reason. Gabriel won’t let anything happen to you again or Bella blah blah etc. I thought I was going insane they just wanted to defend themselves not one tap everyone

looolll it's crazy because The Night Market as a character (what crumbs there were to analyze) in book 1 was clearly a Protector, a Saviour, obsessed with giving their ALL to others even if it's killing them in the process. and i don't hate this! i enjoy the idea of a people-pleasing God.
why would this entity even LET gabriel or bella or whoever be in danger for them, if anything it would be the other way around. my favourite romance was Hazel and part of the appeal was wanting to protect her from all the bad sht going on.
(Plus the implications of dating(? a God like that would be funnn to explore. Bella walking down the street and the NM is like "hm. actually that street looks dangerous 😟 I'm gonna reroute the road so you end up back at home ♥️". lowkey scary. but i don't think the author has the range to write about the cosmic power imbalance of living inside your partner)

Good thing I've never read Night Market or I'd be even more frustrated with IFs lately than I already am. Some stories would work better as actual books rather than IFs themselves (A Tale of Heroes, Magium, Whiskey Four, and apparently this one too).

On another note, since I’ve only come across mediocre WIPs lately, I’m putting my faith in the new game that just came out... The Last Scion. (About to play it and either be disappointed or ecstatic)

I don't know. I keep seeing people say that all newer WIPs are mediocre, which I don't think is fair 💀. There are a lot of good new ones with potential, but everyone is entitled to their opinion ig.

Of course, every critique I post here is based on my own opinion, for example, I don’t like romance or slice-of-life games so I'll bash them more often than not. To me most new WIPs (new as in created this year) feel mediocre, not exactly good, but not that bad either, a few of the new ones I’ve played were even created using chatGPT.

That said, there are some good ones (Walls of Natrun, The Wild Hunt, Quiver, and Velocity -kinda-)but I don’t bring them up here because this is a "stories that left you disappointed" thread, not a "stories you loved" one (plus, I love complaining lol)

That said... The Last Scion is terrible in every way, shape, and form, but it’s still a fun read, kind of like Street Jam where it's so bad it's good.

At this point, she should’ve just written a book. Throwing in an MC just for the sake of calling it an IF, but giving them zero relevance? What’s the point? Night Market’s romance was so frustrating I ended up more pissed off than anything else.
It sounds to me that the author thought they'd make more money if they changed it to an if. Never read it so I'm talking without really knowing but if even the author thought the thing they wrote wasn't good enough to sell well as a novel maybe the issue is within the story itself and not if the book is a novel or an if...

you have the ROs there for a reason
Why do ppl think that being constantly coddled and protected is a healthy and desireable relationship dynamic lol... That's not romance, that's just dependency and infantilization TT Some MCs seem to have all the spine of a wet noodle (uwu)

As a side note, did anyone here play the latest SSW? Saw a lot of ppl complain about it on the forum due to how short it is. Personally, seeing the author turn Manerkol into a total simp was in the "so bad, it's good" category for me.

Ugh, the constant use of "darling" "sweetheart" "my love" "mate (as in soulmate, not the Aussie greeting)" and "MC's mine" in SSW (and other IFs that uses them in the cringiest way possible) is making me nauseous. The MC also feels like a kid and is treated like a kid by other characters and it's so uncomfortable. I've a hard time imagining a male MC being tall and over 18 for how infantilized he is — especially by Straasa and Morkai (I hate Straasa so much I wish he'd fallen off the ship in Book 1 and become fish food he's such an annoying mother hen character agahshjabs).

Hey that's slander on the Magium. The game is easily one of the best in the IF world. Otherwisw I agree on "The Whiskey Four" and the "Night Market". The latter especially. The writer should have tried out playing some IF games or try a smaller project first before turning the Night Market into an IF.

I don't think it's about being healthy, rather than it's just a common trope enjoyed by many. But to claim that it's either that or a power fantasy is just...lol

And yeah, regarding SSW, I always thought it was terrible and basically a sexual harassment simulator.

Magium is actually the reason I got into interactive fiction in the first place and is one of my top 5 IFs of all time. As much as I love it, I got to say it's quite linear in some chapters, and the character customization is almost nonexistent to the point that if it were turned into a book, it wouldn’t change much. Still, it’s a nostalgic goated game to me.

I think Night Market would have worked better if the Night Market was simply a child, you know, they took the form of a child or reincarnated as a child. So the author doesn't have to write the romances for them, they can have the characters protect them, and all that. The Night Market is practically a child, unable to do anything beyond watching how everything unfolds between the characters and the themes surrounding them. 🤷 (Sorry for my English)

I see your point, but as meager as the significance of choices is, I feel like it won't have the same playerbase as it does. How many want to play a permanent child with little to no influence? At least now you have the illusion of choice.

Being honest, I have enjoyed several WIPs like dao ascension, project vampire, autumn winds, lightweaver chosen, orion's own, grey swan - bird rose and college tennis.

This one is so weird.

Oh that one. The author said his stories are Ghibli inspired and maybe I'm blind cause I can't see it at all they're too dark to be "Ghibli inspired". Though they're right up my freak alley. If there's a favorite IFs thread I'll jump in to glaze BoaR so hard. It can get weird, but I promise it's pretty simple... kinda. Vampires (f8cking leeches) create cult to drink human blood. There are werewolves and witches too apparently. Since the author is German, the flow of the writing can be quite, uhhh, distinct? But for certain people who's into the genre it's definitely a good read (especially compared to other angst-filled IFs). Don't know what it is about BoaR but I can actually take the story seriously, it's depressing without trying too hard unlike, say, Woes of Their Wretched or the stuff by Rotting-Ink.

I truly dislike the stuff made by Rotting-Ink they made an interesting and fascinating premise and ruined it by making it too sexually weird and spending more time on side quests and making patreons then writing the game. like why on gods green earth instead of writing your story or doing something more meaningful you're answering asks about the lenght width and sexual stamina of the werewolf Ros knotted ***** ? And they already mapped out 3 books and more then 15 ros a prequel if and also a rewrite. All before even chapter one is finished
