I've only seen one other IF based on the Middle East, and that one's dead.

Let's see, not European fantasy (actually inspired by Africa), a protagonist in their 30's and an interesting story. Any bets on how long this one lives?

sigh.
First, if we don't know much about MC because we're in chapter 1, then we don't know much about ROs because we are... in chapter 1. If we know more about the ROs than the MC at that point, it's probably because the author prefers to talk about the ROs.
Second, yes, 95% of asks are romance-related, but using that as an excuse when you very obviously enjoy writing/talking about romance is weak. Own it. No one's going to be mad about it.
Third, no, MCs aren't always the most important characters for authors.
Fourth, as if the forums or itch are different...
Reads like an attempt to agree with anon while not angering any of the romance-focused crowd/authors.

I was reminded about this due to a Fernweh mention in the leaks thread, and since I don't wanna clog up that thread, I'm gonna post this here bc I'm pretty sure I've never talked about this before. Even tho her writing can be pretty flawed and stilted at times, I still quite enjoy the game and will def be reading the second one, but The Fernweh author herself is… something else, lmao. She's always been really nice every time I've interacted with her and in every post she's made on the forums, on tumblr, etc. But there's always been an vibe to her that's kinda off to me at the same time too, idk how to explain it??

I haven’t been subbed to her Patreon in quite a while, I'm too lazy to log into my Patreon acc to check when exactly my last payment was. But her whole Patreon setup has always been a bit of an ordeal. I have no idea if things are still like that now, though if I had to guess, I'd assume she's tightened security even more, lol. Basically, back when I was a bit more active and involved in the IF community, I’d subscribe to her every few months for a month or two, binge read the new chapters for the demo and whatever other content had piled up in Patreon, then I'd unsub, wait a few months for more content to get added for me to binge read, and resub again, rinse and repeat haha. So I guess I was something of a semi regular supporter. But I completely stopped when she introduced this new ""loyalty"" system, or whatever tf she called it. Basically, demo releases were staggered depending on how long you’d been a patron, your tier, and how many times you’d subscribed in the past, this kind of thing. And, of course, she never explained the specifics, as in she gave no clear timelines, no info on how long you’d need to stay subbed to access the full demo, it was all very vague and unclear.

The last time I ever subbed, I got the whole demo minus the newest chapter in my first month back. I remember being super confused at first because I had read her progress updates and knew the demo was supposed to go further than the content in the link I had received, but I had not realised yet that this new """loyalty"" system was in place yet. Then for the second month I was waffling on whether to cancel or not since on one hand this new system was ridiculous and I was pretty pissed, and on the other hand I really wanted to read the latest chapter bc it was at a particularly interesting plot point and I was super curious to read it (in addition to being curious about whether I'd actually receive the latest chapter in my second month, or if I'd have to be ""loyal"" for another month lmao). I did end up getting the latest chapter on my second month back, after which I promptly unsubscribed for good and haven't been back since lol. I'm guessing that was thanks to some """loyalty points"" or trust or some bullshit I’d built up from being on and off her Patreon since it first launched lmfaooo. This was still during the Dashingdon days, before Patreon plugins and access controls existed, so idk now that I think about it, maybe she’s relaxed the system now that you need a Patreon login for access.

Either way, that new staggered release thing was the last straw for me. Haven’t been back since as I said, though I won’t lie, I’ve definitely been tempted quite a few times, considering how much new demo content must have been added since. The only thing stopping me is my own pettiness + the uncertainty of how many months I’d have to stay subbed before getting access to the full, LATEST demo, not just being several chapters behind the latest chapter. Nah, I’m not playing that game. It’s actually funny comparing that to the Superstition author, who outright encourages people to sub for one month, read everything they want, and then dip, lol. Meanwhile, I can’t help but wonder how long a completely new patron would need to stay subbed under Fernweh’s system just to unlock the entire demo.

Also, this is kind of irrelevant now that Dashingdon’s gone, but since I'm on the topic, I might as well spill the tea here. When the Book Two prologue leaked here pretty much immediately after release, I think she became super paranoid lmao. So I’m pretty sure she used to send out individual demo links to each patron so she could track any possible leaks. The reason I suspect this is bc usually in my experience, most authors have the demo link and password in a pinned Patreon post or at least that's how it was when we were still using Dashigon, obv now there's the plugins and access controls. But with the Fernweh author, you had to wait for her to DM you the link and she always took a few days to message me the link, I feel like it might have been bc she was uploading a new, unique version for every patron so that if they leaked it, she'd immediately know from the individual links who it was looool. Ofc this isn't confirmed, just a suspicion I always had and ngl I would not be surprised it it was true.

The other thing in the same vein I wanna mention is veering more into conspiracy theories now lmao, but I honestly would also not be surprised if she had embedded unique clues in the code to catch leakers too, in case you were smart enough to turn it into an html to post it instead of just straight up posting the link + password. 😂 The reason I think this is bc I remember code-diving the demo once and finding a comment near the code for the password section that said something like, “I know this can be bypassed easily, but if anyone’s doing that, they’ll get what’s coming to them :)” This is not the exact quote since it was a while ago and I don't remember the specific wording, but it was sth along those lines, smiley face included. Like, hello??? That smiley face was so ominous, lmfao. 💀

Anyway, that’s about it for the gossip I wanted to spill and my weekly novel length **** talking done. 😂 All of this is why I never leaked the demo here, even though I really wanted to and was SO tempted. I had the files downloaded and turned into an html and everything, but I ended up being too paranoid she'd somehow figure out who I was and that I’d get banned from her Patreon, lmao. I wouldn't have cared if it was a more rando author, but Fernweh is among my fav IFs, and I'd rather not get banned from the author's Patreon in case I ever decide I want to come back. Idk how it works or what it entails when a Patreon creator bans you, but either way I'd be too lazy to make alt accounts or whatever it is you need to do to bypass it😂

Also, tagging @bluefishes from the thread since they're the person who mentioned wanting to leak Fernweh and they should probs be warned about all of this lol.

BONUS EDIT: Nvm, just checked her Patreon page/tiers, and yep, she’s still doing it. 💀 The cheapest tier description literally says: “Opportunity to have staggered access (based on loyalty/tier/time as a patron) to new, alpha content for TFS: Book Two and early access to its demo. 🐍

Lmao I thought The Fernweh Saga was abandoned. Never would have guessed the author was picking out pirates like the nazi did the jews.

Np! 🫶 And oh yeah if you're leaking anything else other than the demo, then you should be fine since there's no other interactive content as you said! Pretty sure she just posts them as patreon text posts, so you'd have to copy paste them in documents anyway haha and there's no way to id who you are just based on that (other than the timing ig lol)

Coming to complain about a pet peeve of mine: IF authors turning IFs into VNs. I am a kind of gal who really doesn't vibe with VN's because I like my games text-heavy and image-absent. (Plus, in IFs both you and other chars are text, but in VN versions of IFs other characters have an actual image, but you, the MC, are an effing ghost...) Also, characters that the author\their artists considers hot might not be hot to me, but if there is no image, I am free to have an untainted experience.

Oh yeah I agree with this a lot. I don’t care for visual novels really, because I’m someone really picky about the art. I avoid every official art from an IF if I notice that the style isn’t to my preference. (Also very annoying with gender-selectable ROs even with art-styles I find nice, because sometimes only one gender is there when I prefer the other :/)

I wish there were ways to just like grab the text from visual novels somehow without covering up my entire screen…

I saw the author of Merry Crisis saying they are making it a VN and I am all kinds of salty because no, I don't want the art of ROs? They literally almost finished the IF. and then decided to make it a VN... If College Tennis becomes a VN as well, I will reach the Dead sea levels of salt, I swear.
In the same vein, I try to skip asks about face claims and such because oftentimes an author says 'yeah, check out this lookalike for my supposedly super hot char' and posts a man I find really unhot personally.
My other gripe with VNs is that in an IF I have a page with a lot of text, but with a VN I have to click\tap a bazillion times to read the same amount of text while the background doesn't even change\barely changes. Like, if you want a pretty background or music, make a Twine game 🙄

The author of The Bastard of Camelot just confirmed on Tumblr that she’s doing another round of rewrites 🫠🫠🫠 . I guess the game will never make it past the childhood arc.
I understand being unsatisfied with your work, i understand that she is slow to write because of her wrist problem. But good grief, finish this goddamn game first before doing a rewrite 🥴 Her ability to finish this WIP is already on a life line and then she decides to cut this little feeble of hope for the sake of her ego. Think about your responsability to your readers first before going on another little crusade of rewrites that will slow and potentially kill your game conclusion 💖

For what reason? I love BoC, but Jesus Christ. There's nothing you could fix any more, there's nothing you could add any more. The childhood arc was already bloated when she added the dragon as an RO.
