IF STEP 4 IS SUPPOSED TO START RELEASING IN 2027...THEN WHY DID YOU JUST ANSWER AN ASK SAYING STEP 3 WOULD FINISH MID 2027?

(no I'm not going back just because caps lock was accidentally kept on)

Edit: She's also previously said step 4 is coming out in 2028 so idk whats going on.

Almost all of my favorite IFs take about half a year for an update. Not everyone works at a fast pace or has a lot of time to write. I do unfollow accounts if they say on tumblr updated 2 years ago or more but I don't take their games off any lists on Itchio because there is always a chance they'll come back. I do think people's expectations for updates are a bit high. I get waiting half a year for an update is a bit much for most people so I'm not referring to that, but I've seen people complain about waiting a month or two for an update. That's just ridiculous, especially if the author doesn't have a patreon or kofi.
Tbh I am fine with waiting half a year for an update (provided it's substantial and well-made), but my criteria for 'no updates' means no updates on social\patreon\whatever. Like, if an author just drops off the face of the earth for 6+ months without shooting a couple of lines saying 'hey guys, super busy\not feeling it\aliens stole my PC', I assume they lost interest. Maybe I am just burnt out from a bazzilion tumblr IFs that have plot teaser+demo+half a thousand asks answered, and then the author just disappears in thin air.

but sadly I knew it was cooked when the author announced a rewrite
Yeah, an IF author saying they are going to do a rewrite is like parents telling to the kid that their hamster went to a farm...

Our Life? I think that game is going to end up going the route of Xoxo Blood Droplets where it remains in an eternally unfinished paywall.

I do think it will eventually be finished because it too popular to abandon but I wish she wouldn't give unrealistic release dates. Like yeah life happens, that's understandable, but when it sets you back or you didn't reach a certain goal in terms of work done just be honest about it

I mean I kickstarted this and step 3 & 4 are 2027 and The wedding is 2028.

tbh I'm getting sick of the V/N Kickstarter trend. You make all this money and still have problems and delays on top of delays. I get the normal delay but some are a joke.
Twin Coves, i never kickstarted it and I thank goodness I didn't it's been 5 years, meant to come out in 2023. The teams bite off more than they can chew.

I thought step 4 was the wedding?

Edit: I was wrong, though making the epilogue and the wedding separately seems like a mistake to me especially with how long the word counts have been so far. I doubt Step 4 is releasing in 2027.

I mean step 4 and the wedding dlc was seperate in the first game. Though I also think step 4 wont be finished next year since we are still in step 2 currently

I already corrected myself. I got it confused because the characters are around the same ages as they were in Step 4 in the wedding DLC, so my memories merged the two. Very sorry GB Patch but with how the game was supposed to release last october/autumn, the prologue and step 1 taking around 3 years to complete, and step 2 being finished this quick only because its being rushed through? step 4 is 2028 and the wedding is maybe late 2028 to mid 2029.

Is it just me but I like the old our live artstyle better. The new one barely emote at all, like take a look at Cove and his various emotion. The old one also much more colorful compared to the new one. I know it supposed to be autumn, but please have any other color than orange or brown.

Omg, this thread is mentioning so many VN disappointments I'd forgotten lmao. I used to be really into VNs before I got into IF properly and I feel like all of this is a big part of why I eventually fell off and don't care for them much anymore.

Lunaris Games and their shitshow (especially Errant Kingdom 💀)... did not even realise they were still around as a studio, I thought they took the kickstarter money for their newest still unreleased game and dipped lmao, especially after all the criticism about how they handled Errant Kingdom (I am still salty af about that 😒). It's a shame because the studio had potential I think, When The Night Comes was a pretty fun little VN, tho I'm probably biased because I was using tumblr a lot when WTNC and Lunaris as a studio formed, I remember following the devs literally from the first steps of the game creation lol, I mean hell I remember following the dev on their personal tumblr even before the game was ever created because they were a pretty prominent person in The Arcana fandom. It felt bizarre seeing them try to become this super serious game studio and put on an air of professionalism (idk how else to put it lol) when I knew damn well they were spending their early days answering smut asks about WTNC 😭 But I shoulda known things were sus even back then considering that one of the WTNC ROs is literally the dev's OC from The Arcana and they seemed weirdly obsessed with shipping him with one of The Arcana ROs (and later on, obsessed with shipping him with his ex in WTNC lmao, who in retrospect was probably a stand in for The Arcana RO 💀). There was also some drama where the person who created the werewolf RO (sorry, don't remember the name, but I think it started with A?) left the studio or sth but allowed them to keep using the character, however he was clearly written in a way that felt off after his creator left and people were unhappy with that.

I feel like The Arcana used to be quite popular back then and a lot of VN inspired by that spawned lol. Twin Coves, as someone else mentioned, was also a blast from the past lmfao. I had not heard that name in a long time, did not realise that was still kicking. That was also a cool concept and I remember following it... but even back then it seemed ambitious to me, like there was sooo many ROs lol. I also remember 2 other VNs that spawned around the same time but I can't remember their names, they did die pretty quickly though and at least the devs announced it rather than just ghosting or leaving the game in development hell for years.

One of them was this fantasy setting, and the only thing I remember was that the MC was an oracle and also some sort of diplomat I think? And the only other thing I remember is that there was some RO named Seneca I think lol? Shame that one died, the setting seemed quite interesting and the art for it was gorgeous. But I do remember that the dev ended up announcing that they won't be continuing development and making a post where they outlined what the overall plot was supposed to be, which I thought was really cool of them. But yeah that game also had wayyyy to many ROs and shot themselves in the foot with that choice prob. And the other one I remember was this game with a setting similar to A Tale Of Crowns if I'm not mistaken, and the only thing I remember was that there was a lot of drama with the dev lmao and that 2 of the ROs were this married couple that were an emperor and empress and you could have a poly romance with them or romance them separately? Of course, that one also died pretty quickly lmao, much like many IFs these days, the author spent months basking in the attention on tumblr and answering questions about their precious OCs before dipping 💀

These were all really big on the tumblr VN community, especially bc of The Arcana, and were all conceptualised around the same time. The only ones that actually got finished are WTNC but the studio is a mess and lowkey scammers.... and the other one is Andromeda Six, which was also created around the same time. I'm actually not sure if it's finished because that game is aggressively mid and bland to me and I didn't like where the story was heading so I gave up around chapter 4-5. So I don't really follow it, but I've seen people hyped about new chapter drops in various IF discords, so I know it was still being updated. I'm asuming atp its either completed and near the end? Either way, still kinda counts ig lol.

This thread unlocked a bunch of repressed memories within me that feel like a fever dream 😂

I can't believe all these VNs mentioned here nd which I have gobbled up eyes ago from desperation are still stuck up in the same hell hole of unending development progress, I also share the sentiment abt andromeda six and lunaris games, they were boring for me at least.
this entire talk of kick-starts is making me think of touchstarved since I follow them on Tumblr. I saw many negative and apprehensive opinions of the first chapter feeling lacking nd luck luster in retrospect of what was promised to them concerning the romance routes and the mc since everything felt rushed nd underdeveloped.

tbh, the only VNs I have actually have played years ago nd finished nd found mildly entertaining and that much impacting are ebon light nd perfumare.

Xoxo Droplets was pretty popular back in the day (along with Cinderella Phenomenon and Seduce Me: The Otome). Our Life got funded from XoXo Droplets popularity, COVID lockdowns just helped become a major boost. There's a reason why the unfinished XoXo Droplets (that includes popular routes like Shiloh) is locked behind a $15 USD patron paywall.
Popularity alone isn't going to stop GBPatch from abandoning their work, hell it might be the reason she'll keep extending things until people lose interest because it makes her money. She'll distract her fans with a shiny new project eventually and the cycle would repeat itself again.

but why do VNS require money to develop, apart from paying artists, writers and coders? i'd genuinely like to understand. isn't it basically just IF but with pictures and mostly dialogue?

XOXO Blood Droplets and her other discontinued projects stopped because people either retired or stopped responding to her. I didn't like XOXO Droplets in the first place, it is finished, and XOXO Blood Droplets which never finished also never interested me (thats what is behind a paywall, not XOXO Droplets). The only other abandoned product I can think of is that game with centaur people and I again wasn't very interested and from what I can remember she's never made people pay money for it. Also, Our Life's demo grew in popularity past the XOXO Droplets fandom's size and had a kickstarter so I doubt many of the funds from XOXO Droplets funded the game especially as it was never as popular as OLBA was and is.

Yea I was that idiot who backed Touchstarve, truly regret it. They raised over half a mil, and it took them two years for them to actually tell what they've progress on as percentage of what's been completed. They went about saying how they've all worked in game studios before, how do they not know people want to see actual progress.

Whilst IF are patreon, is sees VN are kickstarters

I was in an Otome server and I got called an ******* for not being interested in Touchstarved because it felt too corporate. I don't see why it would matter that you worked at a AAA game studio when you're making a visual novel. 😭 Especially since the studios listed don't make games that are known for the their narrative, and that's one of the things that is essential for a Visual Novel. It felt very much like a "let's capitalize on the growing popularity of the indie otome/dating sim market" thing rather than genuine intent to make a high quality western visual novel. I decided to give it a chance and promptly quit after the "character creation" intro where you're required to pick a guy to romance WITHOUT even having met them in game yet. So I'm just supposed to pick at random and hope that I like the one I picked?!? Edit: And now I'm looking at reviews of the demo and see that my apprehension was warranted.. oof.

It feels like they're combining everything they think their potential audience would like for maximum sales and attention. So i've never even played the demo. Something just felt off to me the first time I saw the itchio page and read that there were ex Riot devs because while I don't know much about Riot nor want to, I know that the AA and AAA gaming space is very corporate even among average employees.

I've seen that in The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe)...which also decided to release for money and have people wait for it to be completed and in bad mobile otome games.
