not trying to be unsympathetic but as long as you make digital media/product, it will be easily pirated. not just IFs, music is easily pirated, artwork is easily stolen and gets claimed by others, not to mention games (even triple A developers/publishers can't truly make a DRM that's un-pirate-able.)
so yeah when i hear that what i truly hear is "i have other reason(s) why i dropped the project (be it laziness, losing motivation, etc) but imma blame pirates so it looks cooler"
if you don't want your product to get pirated you gotta create an invincible DRM, which is like impossible. so good luck with that.
Piracy affects smaller 'niches' more than people realise.
It's one thing to pirate a triple A videogame — they'll always sell, because they're the most popular and will allow the creators income no matter how many manage to pirate the game and share it on piracy websites. Then there's smaller industries, the niches (romance visual novels come to mind as well, just like most text-based games), which
do offer a large selection of games, but by no means does it mean that every small creator with a patreon is able to make a living out of it. I'm not sure about finished products, but the income can't be as high as a game that sells a minimum of a million copies. And when small niche content is pirated, it
can be detrimental to the authors.
People are more comfortable playing for 'certain' entertainment. With niches, it can be a hit and miss. There's money at play, money that could be spent on more important things. Niche titles are not considered as 'important' due to appealing to a smaller demographic.
I'm a pirate at heart, but spend money on it when I'm able to. I often buy games I've already pirated and played solely because I want to support the author. But I'm also a content creator for a different industry, and trust me when I say piracy can definitely be detrimental on some occasions. This is not to say that all piracy is wrong, but it's just disrespectful to deny the effect that piracy can have on small creative spaces. if you pirate, at least be aware of what you're doing.
