It feels like something that was added hastily, honestly, because letting yourself die is better than using that explosion. You waste 20 Qi just to scare the PH into running away and you only gain 1000 extra XP. I guess it’s an option for those who don’t want to accept help, but it’s obvious it wasn’t something the author originally planned to add.

At the Long Chen breakout event you need to help her, stop when she signals you to, then notice the cut iirc. Then you talk to her about it and that unlocks the romance and Yutai fight.
You don’t need to pass the Perception stat check. At least, I didn’t pass it and was still able to start her romance.
