Stories that left you disappointed for a reason

Sigh, truly Sally is the only one in MC’s corner.
I find him creepy af lol. If the author didn't say he isn't a RO, I would've legit thought he has some weird feelings for MC. Controlling, anger outbursts, red flags, red flags everywhere, let me get away pleeeaseee
Then again, what isn't a red flag in that game
The only one I found kinda sympathetic was Lorcan
Everything feels a bit too twisted for my tastes tbh, kind of the opposite of the ones where everything is too idealized and friendly - but I can appreciate the author going there & writing majorly flawed characters & featuring some heavy themes
It's kind of like reading "One hundred years of solitude" or something similar for me in this regard, I think
It makes me uncomfortable, but this by itself isn't bad

Every single npc in we wretched creature is so infuriating. I love tragedy, but holy hell i cannot stand every interaction there.
I feel like every single problem that it has, just there to spice the story a bit and never gonna be brought up again. And the fact that they were so nonchalant about anything.
Totally true. The plot and MC seemed intriguing, but all the NPCs were so annoying that I just gave up reading.

I want to try another story (the one with Hollywood) but if I don't like one author's wip I'm skeptical about all others.

Also, why do authors get so pissed when someone dislikes a character of theirs? I have seen COUNTLESS authors and fans jump up to defend the non existent honour of their favourites 😭 like relax samantha take it as a compliment. It means your characters sound real/convincing enough
I think a great author who can take it on the chin when they get messages about hating their characters is Romonag - Crown of Exile. Like the the story isn't amazing but her characters have flaws and the messages she get about some of them she really leaves it open to your the person, and avoid giving her opinoin.

TBH the problem with IF authors is their online presence, I mean normal literary author (most I should say) get trained to deal with the hate of their book, characters etc. IF author get annoyed and sometimes say "if you don't like it dont read it, I don't make this for you....." Then why are you writing, why put it into a public space if your not ready to deal with question and comment about your characters and story? That not to say that they don't get stupid ask but you need to be able to take it on the chin or remove anonymous ask.

So i was playing "After Dark" after hearing someone praise it. Is it just me or is the MC generally useless? It feels like Michael is the MC and our character is just an yes man to him. He does everything and our MC is just stuck watching everything like an idiot. It would have been understandable if Michael was like a proper Adult but no, he's our age. He plans, he fights, he does everything. Even if we choose to have first aid training, its him who's helping Abby give birth for some reason, and when asked about it, he says he just did what he saw in movies? This is another case of the 'author's favorite character' syndrome. And the pacing is just so disjointed, It just cuts from one scene to another like a WW2 presentation. I genuinely feel that i have no influence on the story and the MC is just a third person observor to Michael. We cry at everything, we get stunned at everything and are the least decisive person in the group. I swear i was not this emotional and moody as a 16 year old. To this day Zombie Exodus seems to be the best sandboxy IF out there.

It seems to be a trend recently authors of interactive fiction publishing games that were originally supposed to be novels or books, that is why main characters seem so useless or atleast not like what a main characters should be, they are just a plot to drive the game, just another normal npc inserted forcefully to make it an interactive fiction.
Kingdom and empires, poma to an extent, and many others.

is this a safe space to say i can't stand Wayhaven.
truly one of the most annoying MCs I've played. the character manages to be both the "chosen one super special powerful person everyone loves" and "absolute moron white bread npc".
the story feels extremely railroaded, the only true choice you got is who to romance and maybe one or two choices per book (tell tina or verda, save bobby or receptionist). every book ends pretty much the same no matter what.
cant even choose to hate the neglectful mother because everyone will be sad if you do.
i feel like i cant say anything bad on tumblr about the story or, god forbid, the ROs without getting shot on sight. idk i just don't get the hype

Come on.. the writing and plot is below average, and the ROs are literally tropes from tvtropes.org. No depth, no personality. If the demo of Book 1 came out today, no one would be impressed. I mean, it would probably find some fans - as every even totally shitty WIP, but that would be all...

But Wayhaven is iconic and it's because it was the ✨ first one ✨

The first one so much about romance (yes, yes, finally a topic that people are actually interested in) . The first one where you can customize and dress up MC like a doll. Even decorate their apartment aww~ And everyone loves you though you're just a human with weird blood. But you don't have to worry about the stats; that you will fail a quest, that you'll lose and die. You are special, enjoy your romance with sexy vampires.

Lmaoo fair enough, i guess im just annoyed it's everyone's first recommendation when asked about IFs

Wayhaven being so bleh is probably why it took me so long to get into IFs. I had a Tumblr friend who was obsessed with it, but I found it extremely boring. At least the writer's character sheet is ridiculously useful for writing. It honestly seems that the writer is the type who is fantastic at planning but sucks in transferring it to the actual story.

sorry if this has been talked ab before but how do people feel about Weeping Gods? I really wanted to like that one cos I haven’t come across any ancient Egypt IFs before but i just can’t get into it?? I tried like twice and I don’t know if it’s because I was expecting a dark story set in Egypt, the overuse of swearing or if there’s something distinctly modern ab it that keeps taking me out. 💔💔 The origin storylines are so cool though, it reminds me of the backgrounds you can pick in Dragon Age Origins—I just can’t get into it and I don’t know if I’m missing out lol. How does everyone feel ab it?

Yeah, change the setting into modern NY and it'll still fit. The historical research is good. Great, even! But the dialogue... the way the characters act, just don't quite hit it. The swearing is comedic for the prologue but it gets old very quickly. To the point of tiring. It becomes more like Veilguard, vibe wise — Weeping Gods is still better written. But then anything is better written than that attrocity (fight me I'll keep this opinion till I die). Definitely immersion breaking, feels quite rushed too but then again, again, what stand alone CoG games don't?

I hated Veilguard too lol. Waste of $70 that I’ll never get back 😍

Yeah I think the worldbuilding is really interesting but the dialogue is really… yeah. I read her faq where she stated that she’s trying to translate Egyptian into modern English and I’m like ? There has to be a better way to do it. There’s so many novels where the dialogue and writing fits the setting but it’s so glaringly obvious in Weeping Gods that I physically can’t finish the demo.

I feel like you can weave comedic elements in a darker toned story and it doesn’t have to be doom, gloom and angst 24/7 but it doesn’t work for me in this IF idk why. ugh such a shame cos we don’t have many IFs set in ancient civilisations 💔

On a side note; anyone knows what's changed in The Six That Thrive? It's been rewritten but I swear the writing's still the same?? Is the change merely cosmetic and only in the code? Cause the writing is kinda janky, and I was excited to see how it has improved in the rewrite but as I said, nothing seems to change??????? What was all the wait for then 💀

I'm not sure if you've played the rewrite up to Chapter 4 before it was made public. If you did, then Chapters 5 and 6 would be the only new content ( well, i think, i didn't restart it from the beginning ). But if you're referring to the original version, then yes, it’s definitely different now. It’s still not 100% clear at times, and the dialogue can feel disjointed, characters might suddenly switch topics, refer to things that didn’t happen, or ignore things that did happen. Buuuut despite that, it’s still an improvement over the first version.

Infamous' drama in the newest chapter with leaked photo of MC & Vic in the diner kinda made me super uncomfortable.

It'd be fine if this drama only add to the MC band's cheating allegation, but the game implying that people thinking MC is homewrecking ValenReign took me right out of the story because my MC is a gay dude. With M!Seven as his ex + MC being somewhat famous with social media presence and all that I thought him being gay would be public knowledge already and people with some common sense would know he'll never ever hit on Vic or feel anything remotely romantic or sexual toward her, but nope, the game didn't acknowledge this at all.

Is this just me thinking too much or maybe I didn't read it right?

Come to think of it, being forced to go with Vic to G's apartments was such a weird railroading.

Another thing I want to get off my chest about Infamous: I hate MC parents with a burning passion and wish we have the option to not care and not interact with them at all. I don't care that they're complicated people or whatever, they're still toxic as heck.

This **** is still being developed?

All the amazing IF's are dead now, but this still exists!?!???!! Why, why.

Infamous is so hardcoded towards drama and angst to the point that it's sometimes dramatic without substance. Still it's better than some drama IFs out there.

The thing is, when you advertise an IF as a 'music' IF, I'd expect something like 70% music and the rest is romance, drama, subplots and stuff. But Infamous is the opposite of it. There's barely anything significantly related to music, it's all just superficial. The best example of this CTOS. I love that it's mostly you climbing through the ranks, trying to make it professional, becoming the best player with proper sports drama and nice sprinkles of relationship drama and wholesome stuff. We need more IFs like this.
